Film screening and discussion in Red Deer will shed light on Alberta's seniors care crisis

March 25, 2015
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I hope you will be able to join us on Monday, March 30 for a film screening and discussion that will help shed light on Alberta's seniors care crisis and create momentum to make quality seniors care a top priority.
Numbers on a Page: The Seniors Care Crisis in Alberta is an important new documentary that weaves together the voices of several people affected by a wave of closures of seniors care centres. The film shows the human face behind the declining number of long-term care beds in Alberta, a trend that has left seniors with complex care needs and their families feeling abandoned.
The Red Deer screening will take place at the Welikoklad Event Centre Theatre (Red Deer College), 4922 49 Street. Doors will open at 6:30 pm, and the screening will begin at 7:00pm. The screening is open to everyone, not just AUPE members, so please invite your friends and family.
After the screening, there will be a panel discussion with seniors advocates and participants in the documentary. Everyone will have a chance to ask questions and share ideas for how we can work together to make quality seniors care a top priority. A reception will follow the discussion.
Admission is free, but seating is limited. You can reserve your seat online at putseniorsfirst.com or by calling the Resource Centre at 1-800-232-7284.
Please help to spread the word about this important film. You can download a poster for the film's tour across Alberta, book a screening at your local or chapter meeting, or let us know about other communities or organizations you think should see this film.
As Alberta's population ages, our seniors care system keeps falling further and further behind. But the government is increasingly distancing itself from this crisis and directing public dollars to private seniors care providers without adequate oversight and accountability.
With over 11,000 members working in seniors care across Alberta, AUPE has long been an important voice advocating for quality care. This film tour will help us to build on that work and strengthen alliances with community partners who have a common interest in ensuring all Albertans can access the care they need.
In solidarity,

Karen Weiers
