Mobilization 2010... ARE YOU READY....!!!!

MOBILIZATION 2010

It's time to get together, stand together, and protect public services

In 2010, AUPE members in all sectors face the toughest economic and political conditions since the mid - 1990s, when the government rolled back our wages by 5% and fired thousands of our co-workers.
Premier Ed Stelmach is making even more cutbacks to try to win back political support, despite having an available sustainability fund that could see Albertans through these tough times. This spells BAD news for public sector employees.
AUPE is also facing negotiations across all sectors; Health Care, Education, Boards and Agencies. Tens of thousands of members will go into negotiations under the Government Services in the fall of 2010. We must stand up for each other so that one sector losses do not set a precedent for further cutbacks, freezes, and job losses.
This is why AUPE is looking for your involvement - to help us bring our members together on common ground.
The members of AUPE can be an effective voice to their families, friends, and the Alberta Government; we must tell them that we need quality public services, especially when the economy is poor.
We cannot rely on the media alone to carry the message. The sound of more than 76,000 voices speaking together can and will have a powerful impact.

AUPE wants YOU to be one of those voices, Starting Now!!!!!

We are Stronger Together
-with your help, AUPE will work together and take our message to the public, where we live, and where we work!

They have to know that ......

*Albertans expect fair, efficient Public Services

*Albertans widely support public Health Care

*Public Employees spend money and pay taxes in their Communities

*Reducing Public Services will hurt local economies

*Standing up for Public Services is good politics

Where we are now.......

*The "Boom" is over

*There's a worldwide recession

*Pressure for rollbacks and cuts

*Hiring Freezes implemented, reducing services

*Direct threats to jobs, wages, benefits

We Need to....

*Engage, organize, and activate our members

*Fight for our jobs, wages, and benefits

*Defend the Public Services Albertans deserve

*Confront a tough economy

*Prepare for bargaining

We need to.....

*Engage our active members

*Encourage our co-workers to volunteer

*Build community strategies

*Take our issues to the public and the government

*Stand together where we live and where we work

Join US in this "IMPORTANT FIGHT"

To volunteer in our campaign to defend the valuable Public Services we provide, please contact the AUPE Vice-President responsible for your region.

Invitation to Jan. 27, 2010 Townhall Meeting to Save Alberta Hospital Edmonton

Dear Alberta Hospital Edmonton supporters:

I hope you will accept this invitation to attend our next town hall meeting to share your concerns about the government's decision to close 246 beds at Alberta Hospital Edmonton and learn about how important this facility is to our city from Alberta Hospital Psychiatrist Dr. Krista Leicht and U of A Faculty of Nursing Professor Dr. Donna Wilson.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m., Jan. 27 at the Southminster-Steinhauer United Church (10740 - 19 Avenue, Edmonton). Please arrive early as we are expecting a full house.

The public outcry against this plan has been enormous. Hundreds of concerned people from North Edmonton communities attended our first town hall meeting on Sept. 2, more than 30,000 people have petitioned government to reverse this decision, and approximately 2,200 have written letters to their MLAs.

Unfortunately, despite the immense concerns expressed by people like you, the government has only "paused" the bed closures. We need your help to stop this plan altogether. If beds are closed at Alberta Hospital, the needs of those with acute mental illnesses will not go away - they will simply have to be served elsewhere, and will likely end up occupying beds in the Grey Nuns, Royal Alex and University of Alberta hospitals. In fact, with our aging population, demand for acute mental health care beds for geriatric patients suffering from Alzheimer's, dementia and other mental illnesses is only expected to grow.

We hope that this town hall meeting will help you learn more about the consequences of closing Alberta Hospital and offer you the opportunity to influence South Edmonton politicians like Edmonton-Rutherfod MLA Fred Horne, who is a key decision-maker in this debate, to make the right decision and keep the beds at Alberta Hospital open.

If you can't make it to our meeting on Jan. 27, please visit www.savealbertahospital.com and click on the link to send a letter to your MLA if you haven't already done so.

Sincerely,

The Save Alberta Hospital Edmonton Campaign team
